Shedding Light On Common Myths About Gas Furnaces
November 1, 2021

With the winter season coming up, you’re probably looking into different heating options for your home; most people opt for a gas furnace, and will either be getting them installed or looking to get them repaired by reaching out to various HVAC contractors.

Gas furnaces are very common, however, there are a few myths circulating around them. For that reason, you may be reluctant to opt for that gas furnace repair. That said, it’s important to know that most of these myths may not be true and are just that; a myth.

Myth 1: Gas Furnace is the Most Expensive Heating System

Yes; gas furnaces are indeed more expensive than a few other heating systems such as an electric furnace however, this only applies to the installation stage. When it comes to the heating power, coupled with the lower cost of natural gas, it still doesn’t make it the most expensive option. If you have natural gas lines running to your home, you’re good to go!

Myth 2: Gas Furnaces Will Dry Out Your Air

Even though hydronic heating systems like boilers or other “wet heat” systems utilize water to create heat, a gas furnace won’t dry out the air in your home. Regardless of whichever way gas furnaces function, the moisture level in your home will practically remain the same. “Wet heat” systems don’t increase the moisture in the air of your home, and gas furnaces won’t reduce it. The only thing that will change in the air of your home, will be the temperature.

Myth 3: Furnace Maintenance is Optional

Like everything else, gas furnaces require maintenance if you want them to keep working efficiently and safely. An annual inspection from a qualified HVAC contractor is a must. More importantly, timely maintenance will save you from a much costlier gas furnace repair down the line and will also ensure your unit runs, works and functions properly for a long while.

Myth 4: Cranking Up the Thermostat Will Heat Your Home Faster

The heat a gas furnace provides is quite powerful, making it an excellent way to turn a cold house warm. However, many increase the temperature setting on the thermostat to heat their homes quicker. This is an inefficient tactic that will only lead to wasted energy. What has to be understood here is that the thermostat will only impact how long the furnace burns. It will never change the intensity of it and you won’t end up with any additional, quick-fix comfort. You should only set the thermostat at a moderate level.
